Most CAFNR students know about the upcoming Career Fair, Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017 at the Mizzou Rec Center on Brewer Historic Courts. But not all may understand the benefits of participating. For freshmen, this is an opportunity to become comfortable meeting employers for potential careers and internships related to their major.
Employers are looking for students to apply for internships and full-time positions. Last year the fair hosted 110 companies, and CAFNR is hoping to have 120 or more this year. Out of the 759 students who attended last year, many found internships or made connections with employers. This year Director of CAFNR Career Services, Matt Arri, hopes to have 900 students attend. You can learn about internships students have had previously on the MU CAFNR Career Service’s Facebook page linked at the bottom of this article.
Regardless of a student’s year in school, attending the fair provides opportunities to practice an “elevator speech” and get real-world feedback on a resume. Even if an internship is of no interest at the moment, making connections can lead to future opportunities.
“Advice I would give is, it’s not about the money you make but the connections you make,” said Julia Graves, sophomore animal science student.
Last year Graves was disappointed to find employers were not looking for freshmen, however, she used the experience to create contacts for future internships. She plans to follow up with employers this year at the fair. Besides meeting new employers, Graves will also be taking advantage of the new aspects to the fair.
“This year I am hoping that the University of Missouri Career Fair Plus app will make it a lot easier,” Arri said.
The app lists all of the employers attending the fair and information about the companies. Students can find companies based on major, work type, and type of position. Arri suggests that students plan which employers they want to see using the map found on the app. Tips on how to succeed at the career fair and workshop dates also can be accessed through the app.
CAFNR has hosted several workshops over the past few weeks dedicated to helping students succeed at the fair. And students can always get help from CAFNR Career Services by scheduling an appointment. Services provided include resume reviews, mock interviews, cover letter preparations, and knowing how to dress for success. You can make an appointment through MU Connect.
Students attending the career fair should enter through the north entrance for easy access. Find more information at: https://www.facebook.com/CAFNRcareers/.
