- Where: MU’s Greek Town
- What: Campus Decorations
- When: October 26
- Time: 6 – 9:30 p.m.
On Oct. 26 from 6 to 9:30 p.m., Greek Town will kick off the 101st Homecoming weekend with campus decorations. A culmination of the Greek community’s hard work, campus decorations is a festive event that features large murals that reflect each competing pairings’ theme.
Greek pairings have been painting and “pomping” for several hours over the last few months in preparation for this event. “Pomping” is a textured design acquired by rolling squares of tissue paper around pencils, markers and even lollipop sticks. The bottom of the stick with the folded tissue paper is then dipped into a flour-based glue and stuck onto the boards. The pomps add dimension to the boards and can highlight the theme.
Festivities always include skits that are performed in front of the boards. Children sit on bleachers or hay bales and watch every pairing showcase Homecoming spirit. Truman the Tiger usually makes an appearance in the skit.
“It’s a lot of hard work,” Caroline Emde of Alpha Delta Pi says, “but when you see the final product, it’s all worth it.”
