MU’s largest campus-wide philanthropy, RAMS, held its Rock-It competition Friday, Feb. 22, at The Blue Note in downtown Columbia, Mo. RAMS, which stands for Rockin’ Against Multiple Sclerosis, is a series of events held during the month of February. The events are organized by a steering committee of MU students to raise money and awareness about people suffering with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
“RAMS is so dedicated to serving the patients afflicted with MS in mid-Missouri,” said senior Sara Evans, a director of RAMS. “We have direct contact with the patients through service projects.”
After the preliminary competition on Thursday and finals on Friday, Rock-It was won by the women of the Delta Gamma sorority. Rock-It is a lip-sync skit competition. The skits are rated on a 100-point scale divided between the participants’ lip-syncing singing ability, choreography, costumes, appropriateness, originality and time.
“Everyone participates,” said Kerry McGowan, a freshman journalism major. “And you forget about how much competition there is between everyone’s separate philanthropies.”
A highlight for many was RAMS’ first event, the featured comic, Theo Von from MTV’s Road Rules. He took the stage at Columbia’s Déjà Vu comedy club on Thursday, Feb. 7. Tickets were $10 and the club was filled with students, mostly from MU sororities and fraternities.
“It was a blast performing for MU,” Von said.
Valentine’s Day was RAMS Cup Night, when students could buy a cup and a t-shirt from RAMS and have the cup filled all night with drink specials from local Columbia establishments. More than 800 cups were sold.
