RecSports provide a fun way for students to keep New Year's resolutions

With students implementing their New Year’s resolutions in full force, many have succeeded in their goal to exercise daily.

A fun, healthy way to stay in shape is through RecSports at the MU Student Recreation Center. With 15 RecSports available, students have quite a selection to choose from.

“I really like sports. I played basketball and volleyball in high school, but once I got to Mizzou I didn't use the Rec Center as much as I would have liked,” said freshman Elyse Gibson. “Joining RecSports was a good way to change that.”

Right now, students can participate in a variety of sports including badminton, basketball, sand volleyball and golf.

Abby Speiler, a sophomore at MU, organized a basketball team in an effort to fulfill her love of the game. After playing four years of basketball in high school, it was an obvious decision.

“I have also played in a Rec tennis singles and doubles tournament that was really fun,” Speiler said.

The most popular sport currently is indoor basketball.

“I heard about RecSports through a friend. [Soon after] I joined her basketball team,” said freshman Lexi Baumert. “It’s been a lot of fun so far and good exercise!”

Students may choose from men’s, women’s or coed sports, depending on the level of competition desired. Note that court sizes are a little smaller than regulation size, which could pose a small problem for those who may be used to a larger playing field.

Baumert still encourages others to join.

“We haven’t lost yet, we did end one game in a tie though, [but] we didn’t lose!" Baumert said. "I would definitely consider playing another RecSport.”

Entry forms for these sports are still available, however, team registration is taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
