CAFNR Student Council takes flight in 2007

The 2007 CAFNR Student Council officers met at the beginning of this semester to develop goals for the council this year.
“Our main goal is to do more programs for students with the student fee money that we receive every semester,” said Jacob Adams, council vice president and agricultural education major. He also said that by hosting more student events, they hope to promote participation within CAFNR clubs and to build relationships with faculty.
Student Council officers presented their goals to the organization at the first meeting. Ashley Noblitt, council president and agricultural education major, said the members have been enthusiastic about participating and brainstorming to make fun, new events happen.
“Even before our first regular meeting, we had three new organizations contact us about participating in student council,” Noblitt said. “And these are clubs that have not participated in the past.”
Officers and members have been busy preparing for a softball tournament, stepping up efforts for Relay for Life and improving the council’s Web site.
On April 22, the council hosts a Spring Swing softball tournament, open to everyone in CAFNR. A team consists of five girls and five boys. Students can organize teams or look for sponsorship by CAFNR organizations. The entry fee is $20 with all the profits from the event donated to Relay for Life.
The recruitment team, lead by Ashley Schlichenmayer, is making plans to participate in Mizzou Relay for Life, April 14 -15.
“We want to bump up our participation,” said Schlichenmayer, a plant science major. The goal is to raise $500 and have at least 10 members present at the event. In addition to the money raised at the softball tournament, Student Council will be collecting donations. Improvements to the Web site also are in progress. Sarah Shaw, agribusiness management major and public relations officer, said goals for the new site include posting all necessary applications and forms along with the meeting minutes. These postings will allow organizations to access information in advance of deadlines. By creating a useful Web site, Student Council hopes to develop an open forum with CAFNR’s student body.
Student Council recently received plaques for winning the Organizations category in the 2006 MU Homecoming parade.
“We want to post them with a picture of our float in the Agricultural Building Student Resource Center,” Noblitt said, adding that she is looking forward to expanding on past successes within Student Council by meeting the new goals.
