It's not cheap, it's romantic

After Christmas, bank accounts and creative gift-giving ideas often are drained. As Valentine’s Day approaches, students short on cash can find a variety of experiences and inexpensive gifts for their loved ones on the MU campus.

The Missouri Students Association and the Graduate Professional Council will sponsor several events for students. From 8 p.m. to midnight, Feb. 9, in Memorial Union, students can make gifts at the Valentine’s Day Craft Night. Supplies, music, pizza and sweets will be available free of charge to students.

From 7 to 10 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, in Stotler Lounge, the Student Union Programming Board will host the Caring, Sharing, and Bearing workshop. Students can stuff and accessorize a bear for a sweetheart or friend. A donation of five canned goods or $5 to the Central Missouri Food Bank is suggested. For more information call 573-884-9717 or email subp@missouri.edu.

Those who don’t have the chance to make a gift in advance can take their significant others to the MSA/GPC Craft Studio on Valentine’s Day from 4 to 9 p.m. Students should reserve a space by Feb. 7. In the studio, students can make small keepsake crafts such as picture frames, decorative flowerpots and jewelry. The cost is $5 for students but ask about a two-for-one special. Call 882-2889 for reservations.

It’s hard to go wrong with the ever-popular gift of flowers. Tiger Gardens has many options this Valentine’s Day, and all within a budget. Student manager Jill Leroy said the shop has plenty of options for students who want their gifts to have a big impact.

For $3.95 to $5.95, Tiger Gardens is offering plantings that will be in bloom for weeks. You can also give your valentine a Kiss Gift Box. A Hershey Kiss-filled box is wrapped and adorned with a rose. A single rose vase is $14.95 and a three rose vase is $24.95.

“You can also purchase roses in a larger quantity or chose a boxed arrangement,” Leroy said. “We will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 13 and 14 for any last-minute orders.”

To place an order, stop by Tiger Garden in 2-34 Agriculture Building or call 884-1191. View sample arrangements at http://tigergarden.missouri.edu.

CARNR’s Horticulture Club also will have a rose sale fundraiser Feb. 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We have everything from single wrapped roses to dozen boxed roses,” said club president Amanda Brinker.

Make a quick stop at the Anheuser-Busch Natural Resources building lobby to pick up roses ranging from $4 to $50.

For those students looking for a romantic date experience, “Love Actually” will be shown at 8 p.m. in Wrench Auditorium in Memorial Union. This free movie is sponsored by the MSA/GPC Films Committee.

After crafts and a movie, students can make one final stop at the campus observatory atop the Physics Building where they can enjoy a view of the heavens. Laws observatory is open Wednesdays from 8 to 10 p.m., making the perfect cap for a romantic evening on campus. Students can look at the stars and computer imagery and listen to a presentation given by the attendant.
