The College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources is now accepting nominations for awards honoring the efforts of outstanding individuals on behalf of the College. These awards will be presented April 12, 2007, at the 8th annual Celebration of Excellence Award Banquet.
Included among these awards are the Frederick Blackmar Mumford Awards, which are designed to honor those faculty and staff who display excellence in their occupations and colleague relations. Recipients of the awards must possess strong leadership skills and strive toward progress and an overall betterment of Mizzou.
“This is a very prestigious award within the College,” said James Hundle, assistant to Vice Chancellor and Dean Thomas Payne. “It gives us a chance to award and honor our faculty and staff members.”
The Mumford Outstanding Faculty Award is given an individual who has been employed at MU for a minimum of five years. Nominations must include a one-page summary explaining the nomination, current resume of the nominee and three to six support letters, citing the faculty member’s significant achievements. Nominees for the Mumford Outstanding Staff Award need to have a three-year history at MU. Nomination packets follow the same criteria as the faculty award.
The Mumford Distinguished Service Award is designed for any alumna, alumnus or friend of CAFNR who has helped to better Mizzou and the community. This award is designed to acknowledge anyone who has, “gone above and beyond to help the College,” Hundle said.
Nominees must have helped to uphold the College’s land-grant mission. Nominations must include a one-page summary explaining the nomination along with a summary of the nominee’s contributions towards Mizzou and its programs.
Other CAFNR honors to be awarded April 12 include Outstanding Junior Faculty Teacher Award, Outstanding Senior Faculty Teacher Award, Outstanding Undergraduate Adviser Award, Outstanding Graduate Adviser Award, Distinguished Researcher Award and the J.W. Burch State Specialist Award. All nominations must be submitted to James Hundle, by 5 p.m., March 16, in 2-69 Agriculture Building.
The CAFNR Outstanding Student Awards are bestowed on students who display excellence in academics as well as outside activities. Nominees are judged on their co-curricular activities, grade point average and work experience.
“The most emphasis is put on your leadership roles and activities,” said Ashley Noblitt, CAFNR Student Council president. “The activities a student participates in tell the committee a lot about the person.”
Students can be nominated by any adviser, faculty or staff member in CAFNR.
“We send out a mass e-mail to the entire student body to make them aware of the recognition,” Noblitt said.
Nominations must include a student essay and recommendation letter describing the nominee’s characteristics and involvement in CAFNR. The Outstanding Senior Award will be presented at graduation in May, while the freshman, sophomore and junior awards will be presented at the Celebration of Excellence in April. “It’s a big honor to receive a CAFNR Outstanding Student Award. Other students see this award and look up to the individual,” Noblitt said.
Many individuals help to make MU and CAFNR a better place. These awards are just one way to honor their efforts. For more information on the awards or to find out how you can help nominate someone, contact James Hundle in 2-64 Agriculture Building.
