New grads greet a solid job market

The familiar chords of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, students dressed in caps and gowns who are ready for their diplomas and graduation parties are just a few days away.
CAFNR’s graduation ceremony is set for 12:30 p.m., May 12 at the Hearnes Center.
“[Our graduates] seem like they get better and brighter every year,” said Paul Vaughn, CAFNR associate dean and director of academic programs.
There are 280 students who completed their coursework during the 2007 winter semester who will walk across the stage along with 20 graduates from the 2007 summer semester.
The 300 graduates have more to look forward to than receiving a diploma. Due to a flourishing economy, there are increased job opportunities.
“Our seniors are enjoying a great job market,” said Stephanie Chipman, director of Career Services. “[This is] evidenced by entry-level salary increases, early offers, bonuses and continued availability of positions.”
Vaughn said although job opportunities are growing, only students who seek the jobs out will enjoy the market.
“There are a lot of opportunities out there,” Vaughn said. “But they’re only for those who are persistent and are working hard to get their resumes out there.”
Graduating senior Veronica Nigh, who will be receiving a degree in agricultural economics and minors in political science and international agriculture, attributes her accomplishments to opportunities CAFNR afforded her. Shortly after graduation she will be moving to Taipei, Taiwan, to fulfill an internship with USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.
"[Without CAFNR] I would not have been qualified in a manner to make [Taiwan] an option," Nigh said. "Over the past four years, I have grown as a student and a person in immeasurable ways. I have been continually impressed by the excellence of my college and all that make it what it is. I will always be proud to be a Tiger."
