Hog wild for Sigma Alpha

For the second year, the Sigma Alpha Professional Agriculture Sorority will host the CAFNR Super Farmer contest, an event in which teams of two boys and two girls compete in a series of agriculture-related competitions such as milk chugging or hay bale tossing. The contest begins at 6 p.m., March 13, at the Trowbridge Livestock Center.
“The contest challenges you to become comfortable doing activities, like a pig scramble, that you would normally shy away from because they are dirty or just out of the ordinary,” said Julie Niemeyer, fundraising chair for Sigma Alpha. “This year’s competition will include both practical and entertaining activities that are encompassed within the agriculture industry.”
Last year, Sigma Alpha designed the contest as a fundraiser. However, this year Super Farmer will be more of a fun event.
“By the time we got done buying all the materials and getting things donated [last year], we realized we weren’t going to make any money,” Niemeyer said. “We’re doing it again because our girls had so much fun putting it on. We had fun getting involved with it; and we had fun getting to know all students throughout CAFNR.”
Everyone is encouraged to participate. Teams aren’t required to represent a club or organization, or even be from CAFNR. Registration is $20 if groups sign up before March 5 and $25 the night of the event. Niemeyer hopes for 15 or 20 teams to participate.
“I would definitely recommend it because it is a great time to have some friendly competition and hang out with friends,” said Kristen Kallash, sophomore agricultural education major. “I enjoyed how everyone got to come, hang out and have a good time, but it got really overly competitive with some of the guys.”
Participants can turn in money and registration forms to 2-64 Agriculture Building. T-shirts are $10 and will be available with pre-registration. If a team preorders shirts, up to five points will be added to its score. For more information, contact any member of Sigma Alpha or Julie Niemeyer at jmny83@mizzou.edu.
