AFA selects two CAFNR students for advisory team
By Jessica McCormack, posted 5/3/06

CAFNR students Megan Fox and Mindy Montgomery were recently selected as members of the 2006 AFA Student Advisory Team (SAT).

AFA, the Agriculture Future of America, is synonymous with words like network, opportunity and achievement. College students have a unique opportunity to gain leadership skills, take advantage of internship and career opportunities and apply for financial assistance through the scholarship program. In addition, the AFA organization hosts a conference in Kansas City, Mo., where the SAT plays a vital role.

According to the 2005 AFA conference guide, AFA values the input and leadership of today’s youth and annually selects students to serve as members of the SAT. This team of young men and women is responsible for assisting AFA with planning and hosting the AFA leaders conference. Their goal is to prepare a program that provides an expansion of a student’s academic, leadership and work experiences.

In addition, Nancy Yates, program manager for AFA believes they provide a unified voice for all those involved with AFA.

“The team also acts as ambassadors for the AFA organization on their campuses and through interaction with AFA partners,” Yates said.

Mindy Montgomery, one of the CAFNR students recently selected said her role involves setting a positive example for her peers.

“My main priority is to serve the AFA Student Advisory Team and participants to the best of my ability, by setting strong examples in professionalism and networking,” Montgomery said.

Megan Fox is serving her second term as a SAT member. She credits AFA with helping her to find a sense of belonging in the industry, considering she didn’t grow up on a farm.

“I didn’t know very much about agriculture, but with the help of organizations, specifically AFA, I was able to find my place in the agricultural industry,” Fox said. “I was also provided with the tools needed to become successful both personally and professionally.”

Fox said she plans to help others by sharing her story and allowing them to find their niche in the industry as well.

Montgomery is the daughter of Bobby and Connie Montgomery. She is a junior majoring in animal science and agricultural economics.

Fox is the daughter of Jerry and the late Mary Fox. Megan is a senior majoring in agribusiness management.
