CAFNR
open house yields great turn out

From new windows and state-of-the-art mock interview equipment,
to new computers, a resource library and free career publications,
the CAFNR Career Services had a lot to show off during its open
house held on March 14, 2006.
Members of the office were very pleased with the turn out.
“We’ve had a very good turn out today, too many to
count,” career services administrative assistant, Jane Loudermilk,
said.
The Career Services office, including the new student center,
has been up and running for quite a while but many students aren’t
aware of what exactly the office has to offer.
“Quite a few students use the equipment, but the room is
never full,” CAFNR freshman, Miranda Leppin said. “CAFNR
students seem to think the new stuff is just for agricultural
journalism majors, but that is certainly not true.”
According to Stephanie Chipman, CAFNR Career Services director,
everyone should take advantage of the Career Services office and
student center.
“We have something for everyone,” Chipman said.
The mock interview equipment is eventually going to be used as
a course supplement. Classes will have an opportunity to sit in
one room and watch one of their fellow classmates during a live
interview in another via video technology. With that, students
will evaluate and learn from each other. The idea is to improve
everyone’s skills before they have to do the real thing.
Rolling-ad screens in the computer lab give CAFNR organizations
a chance to advertise upcoming events and activities. This computer
lab will also be one of the main locations for resume workshops
in the future. The computers are open and encouraged for CAFNR
student use.
There is a fast-growing resource library that has all sorts of
career publications, industry reference books and other informational
materials available for checkout.
Free career publications are one of the hidden secrets of CAFNR
Career Services. Professional career-related publications like
Job Choices are available free of charge, along with several items
put together by the Career Services office such as the Job Search
Strategies handbook.
“The goal of Career Services is to help CAFNR students
get an idea of what they want to do after MU,” Chipman said.
“Our office is home to an overwhelming amount of resources
and information that is very helpful to all our students. We encourage
each and everyone to stop by and let us know what we can do to
help.”
