Columbia offers many Valentine getaways
By Shawn Davis, 2/10/06

Every year it is the same thing. Flowers, chocolates, presents, followed by a nice candle-lit dinner. It is the standard Valentines Day Celebration, the typical way for one to show their love and appreciation for one another. For many, the holiday causes more hassle and financial damage than happiness to a couple.

Instead of dealing with the annoying task of making reservations at the most high- class and expensive restaurant, or the ordinary chain, take a look at some of the other restaurants around Columbia. All the local places may offer you and your sweetie a better romantic experience.

The first romantic getaway is Murry’s, located in the Green Meadows Plaza, this has been one of the top date restaurants in Columbia for the past decade. Hidden in seclusion, in the back of the plaza Murry’s atmosphere is unlike any others around town. Once inside, you’ll notice the soft jazz band, usually centered around a piano, setting the mood for the tender atmosphere. With plenty of seating for two, Murry’s gives a very intimate feel to every couple inside. The menu is very moderately priced, averaging about seven dollars a meal. Murry’s also has one of them most extensive wine lists in town. The quality, atmosphere and affordability make Murry’s a great Valentines Day treat.

Another place that you can show your sweetie a good time is Everett’s. A little pricier than Murry’s, Everett’s offers one of the best steaks in town, coupled with a very romantic atmosphere. The average cost of an entrée from Everett’s is around $13, and with a huge bar, the perfect bottle of wine or champagne will justbe an order away.

Other places that are very popular around town are Addison’s, Jacks, Cici’s Broiler, Boone Tavern and the Pasta House, all located in downtown Columbia. Addison’s, Cici’s and Jacks are a little pricey and require reservations. If that is not the scene you are looking for try Boone Tavern or the Pasta House. The Pasta House is a unique experience that is quite affordable. It is not the ordinary date meal; with a broad selection of Italian pastas this is a great place to switch things up a little.

Another place that could really broaden your horizons is Osaka Sushi bar. Located off of Nifong, Osaka offers unique Japanese foods such as sushi, tempura and even the very exotic octopus. With a vintage Japanese atmosphere, Osaka will not disappoint your loved one.

So instead of going to the familiar restaurants around town, such as Outback, Red Lobster or Olive Garden, try some local restaurants. Try some places that will offer quality meals instead of the same thing that you can get at any chain restaurant.
