The
Mizzou Meat Market is one of MU’s hidden wonders. Located
in Eckles Hall, the market is a fully operational meat processing
plant and market for students and members of the community
to purchase top quality meats.
The
Mizzou Meat Market sells beef, pork and lamb in a variety
of cuts, including T-bone steak, ground round, ham slices,
bacon and rack of lamb. The meat is equal in quality to that
of supermarkets, but it is less expensive because it is frozen
and paper wrapped.
“The
best selling items are tiger tales, a spicy cheddar cheese
filled bratwurst, and beef jerky,” said Natalie Kollars,
a senior food science major.
Kollars
works at the market sales counter and suggests customers try
the breaded pork tenderloin.
The
Mizzou Meat Market is open noon to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays
and Fridays. Appointments for special pick-up are available.
MU students can even student charge the meat they purchase.
Operated
by students in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural
Resources, the purpose of the Mizzou Meat Market is to teach
and provide research activities for the food science and animal
sciences programs.
“Working
at the Mizzou Meat Market is an excellent way for the students
to gain hands-on, entrepreneurial experience they need to
help them get a job,” said Carol Lorenzen, associate
professor of meat science.
The
market is federally inspected and meets the United States
Department of Agriculture’s standards for sanitation
and safety. It is committed to selling high quality products
and keeping customers’ well-being in mind.
