Rock legend Elton John is performing Friday, Oct. 5 at Mizzou Arena. Columbia, Mo., is one of 38 stops on his “Rocket Man: Number Ones” tour.
"We are extremely excited and honored to host an artist of the caliber of Elton John," said Tim Hickman, associate athletic director, in a release on Aug. 21. "This will be the largest concert we have ever hosted in our arena and the largest to come to Columbia since the Rolling Stones performed at Faurot Field in 1994."
Tickets went on sale at Brady Commons on Aug. 27.
“One guy got here at 7:30 a.m. and waited until 10 a.m. for tickets,” said Meg Wilki, a senior working at the box office. “There was a solid line for two hours, mostly students.”
In March, John released "Rocket Man: Number Ones," a digitally re-mastered collection of his greatest hits from the first three decades of his career. It debuted in the top 10. After more than four decades as a singer and songwriter, John has sold more than 200 million album copies. “Candle in the Wind,” a tribute to John's dear friend, Princess Diana, holds the record for most single copies sold at 33 million.
“He’s broken down barriers,” said Justyn Witt, a sophomore human development major. “He’s pretty flamboyant about his sexuality and with his boas and funny glasses: he cares.”
Witt anticipates the crowd to be singing along since John is performing all of his “number ones” and can’t wait to hear him sing “Tiny Dancer.”
“He’s been around forever and he’s still popular,” said Alexis Fuemmeler, a freshman physical therapy major. “His songs are classic.”
John performs at 8 p.m. on Friday at Mizzou Arena. Tickets are on sale at Brady Commons and range from $47 to $67.
