Independent Aggies dominate stick horse rodeo
by Katie Maupin, posted Sept. 25, 2007

Seven teams turned out to compete in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources’ CAFNR Week Stick Horse Rodeo, which was sponsored by the Collegiate Horseman’s Association and Block and Bridle.

But don’t let the name fool you. Even though there was not a real horse in the rodeo, there were plenty of spills and thrills to go around.

Teams participated in four events including stick horse barrel racing, hay bale toss, fake calf roping and apple cider chugging. There were plenty of laughs from the stands.

“It’s not as funny when they are good at it,” said Becky Schneider, a CAFNR sophomore, who was watching the event.

When the dust cleared, it was the Independent Aggies who came out on top, after first winning the stick horse barrel race and the hay bale toss. This was the third year in a row that the Independent Aggies “rode” to victory.

“This just lets it be known who the real Aggies are,” said Bruce Bishop, a member of the winning team.

Alpha Gamma Sigma finished second in the contest and Alpha Gamma Rho placed third.

Dallas St.Clair, the co-president of the Collegiate Horseman’s Association, said he wished more people would have turned out, but they had a good contest.
