CAFNR Week set to entertain, educate
by Becky Legel, posted Sept. 13, 2007

The College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources is ready for 2007 CAFNR Week, which is filled with numerous activities stretching from Sept. 13 to Sept. 21.

Each year several changes are made to improve the week, but some things will stay the same.

“This year we are crowning our royalty earlier within the week so they may actually reign at a few of the events,” tri-director Annette Bruch said.

King and queen candidates from each student organization are giving presentations at Columbia-area elementary schools from Sept. 10 to Sept. 14. Interviews took place Tuesday night and a king and queen will be crowned Tuesday, Sept. 18.

The other main change is that CAFNR organizations will have booths at Columbia’s Twilight Festival on Thursday, Sept. 13.  Each student organization was asked to design a small, child-oriented booth to teach children about the importance of agriculture.  The CAFNR Week Steering Committee will provide a pedal tractor pull for children and grilled hamburgers for everyone.

“By having a strong presence at the Twilight Festival we hope to create a stronger relationship between the community and CAFNR,” Bruch said.

The CAFNR Week Steering Committee also hopes to educate the University and public and unite students and faculty in a celebration of agriculture.

Similar to previous years, each student organization will raise money through ‘Change Wars.’  According to the CAFNR Web site, money will be collected at each night’s events and during the day at Mumford Hall, outside 2-64 Agriculture Building and in the Animal Sciences Research Center.

All monetary donations for the week will go to Farm Safety 4 Just Kids.  The charity provides families and communities with educational resources to make the farm a safe and healthy environment.

Members of the community, students and faculty will all find something to do during CAFNR Week.  For more information and a list of activities, visit the CAFNR Week Web site.
