Career Services tips for success

It’s
never too early to start planning for that dream career, and
CAFNR Career Services is a great place to start. Everything
from career searching strategies to perfecting resume skills,
they have it all.
CAFNR student Jessica Bartz looks forward to assistance provided.
“I need all the help I can get.”
Stephanie Chipman, director of CAFNR Career Services said
the first steps start with the person. “Know you who
are and what you want and use those as your marketing tools.”
However, knowing everything isn’t exactly easy for some
students. “We can help students focus on a career of
interest, plan a search strategy and move on from there,”
Chipman said.
Other things such as resumes, professional dress and cover
letters also play a role in the marketing process. A press
release by CAFNR Career Services explained that more than
45 percent of employers take less than 30 seconds to view
one resume, and 73 percent of employers said they first notice
the professional appearance of a student at a career fair.
First impressions definitely count.
To help ensure a successful impression, CAFNR Career Services
offers many critique opportunities. Through resume workshops,
mock interviews or personal meetings, students can receive
motivating feedback.
“We just try to help students in a lot of different
ways,” Chipman said.
CAFNR students have always done a marvelous job presenting
themselves according to Chipman, but some mistakes can still
be made. “The main thing I see with students is spending
too much time on the Internet, and not enough with real people,”
Chipman said.
Networking with mentors, alumni and friends is a great advantage
for students to develop their professional approach. “Tell
everyone what you want to do,” Chipman said.
