“Bid
high people, and bid often,” said auctioneer Judy Domeny
Bowen as she kicked off the auction segment of “Routes
to Route,” the centennial celebration of the Missouri
Folklore Society. “Know that all the money’s going
to a good cause.”
A crowd
of more than 60 were in attendance to partake in the auction
of rare and antique goods on the evening of Nov. 3 in Stotler
Lounge of Memorial Union. Bowen, a Rogersville, Mo. resident,
along with Irvin Rice, a Louisville, Kent. resident, led the
event. Up for auction was a diverse array of rare items, donated
by members of the M.F.S., including canned pickles, a number
of antique brass candlesticks and a collection of wooden horse
dolls.
“This
is your best chance to prove you came to horse around,”
Rice said, as he held one of the dolls.
The auction
was one of many events held last weekend as part of “Routes
to Routes: a Celebration of 100 years of the Missouri Folklore
Society.” The event began on Nov. 1 and extended though
Nov. 4. Along the way, guests were treated to 14 panel discussions,
open jam sessions and dinner plays. According to its Web site,
the Society was first organized on Dec. 15, 1906.
“It’s
definitely an honor to be a part of [Routes to Routes],”
Bowen said. “There’s an incredible amount of history
behind the Folklore Society.”
