in Columbia, MO
Julia Shuck, posted Dec. 7, 2006
When
searching the Internet for clubs in Columbia Missouri, more
than 25 clubs, bars and restaurants come up. If you are looking
for something to do in Columbia, here are just a few of the
highlights.
The
Blue Note and Mojo’s
As you
enter The Blue Note, your driver’s license is checked
and the back of one of yours hands is stamped. You are given
a wristband if you are 21 or older, and both hands stamped
if you are under 21.
Located
on Ninth Street in downtown Columbia, The Blue Note offers
a variety of live musical performances for all ages on any
given night. Recent acts that have performed at The Blue Note
include Shooter Jennings, Pat Green and Little Big Town will
be performing Jan. 6
“Snoop
Dog and Willie Nelson brought in large crowds,” Lena
Hatton, The Blue Note marketing director said. “We bring
in all acts, and therefore not one genre of music is better
than the other as far as crowds are concerned.” The
show will determine how large a percentage will be underage,
Hatton said about the crowd makeup. “On average 30 percent
are underage.”
Jordan
Jameson, MU sophomore, attended the Shooter Jennings concert
at the Blue Note. “I love the Blue Note,” Jameson
said. “It is the perfect size for a venue and it is
one of my favorites. Every seat is a good seat and it sounds
really good, plus the staff is nice.” The Blue Note
offers many all-ages shows as well as 18+ and 21+ shows, this
was an all ages show but they still checked ID's at the door,
he said.
The Blue
Note will become a smoke-free establishment on Wednesday,
Oct. 18 according to their monthly newsletter. This is months
earlier than the required enforcement date.
For those
old enough to drink, the bar selection includes beer by the
bottle, pitcher and draft, specialty drinks and martinis,
as well as liquors served by the shot, on the rocks or mixed.
Office
hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday
from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. During these times, staff can be contacted
by calling at (573)-874-1944 or faxing (573)-443-2784. Their
e-mail address is: noteperson@thebluenote.com. Club doors
open at 8:30 p.m. except for early shows and last call is
at 1 a.m.
For more
information on upcoming performances, drink specials, or to
receive the club’s newsletter, which includes information
such as new shows and happy-hour details check out the Blue
Note and Mojo’s Web site.
Cody’s
“I
like [Cody’s] for the country aspect,” says Kasey
Hunt, MU senior. “I enjoy line dancing, but I don’t
like going there without someone to dance with. Whenever going
to that type of bar, you always want a dance partner.”
Cody’s,
located on Paris Road, consists of a bar with a dance floor,
stage, pool-table area, mechanical bull and three bar counters.
Those who visit Cody’s find it to be trendy and good
for after work, dancing and socializing. It offers a fun atmosphere
with functions and free giveaways on special nights.
While
21 is the age limit to get into Cody’s, minors can get
around this by attending an event hosted by MU’s Independent
Aggies, at which minors, ages 18 and older, are allowed entrance
into the country bar for the evening. Thursday, Dec. 7, the
Independent Aggies will be hosting Stop Day Dance beginning
at 9 p.m., which will be the last chance for minors to access
Cody’s this year. Admission is $5 and for those of you
21 and older, a bottomless cup costs $5.
For more
information, you can contact Cody’s by calling (573)
474-3004.
Déjà
Vu Comedy Club
Stand-up
comedy upstairs with drink specials and appetizers to go along
with the show and a dance floor with live DJ downstairs to
follow up the show is what you can expect when you go to Déjà
vu Comedy Club, located on Cherry Street, if you are 21 or
older.
As for
those under 21 years of age, don’t be surprised when
you receive two brown wrist bands, one for each wrist, a ticket
stub that must be signed by the ticket master and your waitress.
Your driver’s license will be held until after the comedy
show, at which point you are expected to leave the club immediately
or risk losing your ID to the police, with same rules applying
for those who decide to drink underage.
“I
have only been to the comedy show, which is upstairs in Déjà
vu, but it is a lot of fun,” MU sports medicine intern,
Stephanie Luecke said. “The comedians are great, you
get to sit with all your friends and they have waitresses
coming around to get orders all the time.”
Average
costs for attending a show are $5 on a Thursday night, $6
on Friday night and $7 on Saturday night, unless prices are
changed to accommodate various shows. Standard showing times
are Thursday at 9:30 p.m., and Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.
and 10:15 p.m. The Vu, as it is informally called, is opened
Thursday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., with a
different act of two comedians each week.
Hosting
acts such as Tim Allen, George Lopez and Drew Carey, The Vu
offers tiered seating, which circles the stage, allowing everyone
to see the comedians from wherever they are sitting in the
comedy club.
Tickets
for shows can be reserved ahead of time, with no advance payment,
by calling (573) 443-3216
