CAFNR
Week king candidates

During
CAFNR week, each club selects one king and one queen candidate.
Each candidate must complete a list of requirements to remain
in the running as a candidate according to the steering committee.
They must:
1. Be at least a third semester student.
2. Take an active part in their club’s skit.
3. Participate in the Lip Sync contest at Skit Night.
4. Participate in the Family Day/Community Service Event.
5. Attend an interview
6. Write an essay and submit a resume.
7. Attend Barnwarming
8. Attend at least three additional activities throughout
the week representing their club.
This year’s
king candidates are Cory Cawthon, Jared Liles, Bruce Bishop,
Mike Ockerhausen, Tyler Francis, Travis Heman, Tanner Meyer,
Eric Hoffman, Paul Cowherd, and Matt Brown.

Bruce
Foster Bishop II is a junior majoring in Agricultural
Systems Management. He is involved with the Independent
Aggies, the Agricultural Systems Management club, Block
and Bridle, Alpha MU, and the Agronomy club. He is representing
the Independent Aggies. He works at the University Bradford
farm, does bull dozing, and feeds horses. He is honored
he was nominated. He said it has been, “quite an
experience.” He said he never thought as a freshman
he would be in this position. If he won, he said he would
be extremely honored, speechless to say the least. “Honoring
the Ag. school in that way would be outstanding,”
Bishop said. After his undergraduate studies, he is going
for his masters. He hopes to go into sales with equipment,
or go into agronomy. |

Matthew
Derek Brown is a senior majoring in plant science with
an emphasis in crop management. The organizations he is
involved include the Agronomy Club, CAFNR Ambassadors,
Mizzou FFA Alumni, and the National Society of Collegiate
Scholars. The club he represents as king candidate is
the CAFNR Ambassadors. He works on campus in Dr. Dale
Blevin’s plant physiology lab and at the Thomas
Jefferson Agricultural Institute. He takes the nomination
as an honor, and a privilege. “CAFNR is a great
college to represent,” he said. “I would feel
fortunate to represent CAFNR as the king of CAFNR Week,”
Brown said. His plans for the future are to graduate in
May. From there, he is not sure. He might continue to
work for the Jefferson Institute. |

Cory
James Cawthon is a sophomore majoring in Biochemistry.
He represents the Mizzou Alumni FFA Chapter. He works
two part-time jobs, one at the University beef farm and
the other at the Bass Pro shop. Cawthon said that he is
very excited to be nominated and would be proud to accept
the honor of CAFNR week king on behalf of his chapter.
In the future, he plans to attend some form of graduate
studies program after completing his undergraduate experience. |

Paul
Emerson Cowherd is a junior majoring in agricultural systems
management. He is a part of the Independent Aggies and
the Agricultural Systems Management club. He represents
the Agricultural Systems Management club. Cowherd works
for a farm supplier. “Kind of an honor because I
was nominated by a group of girls,” he said on being
nominated. When asked how it would feel to win, Cowherd
said “That would be kind of a big deal.” In
the future, he plans to own a farm, produce farm supplies,
or go into owning a dairy farm. |

Tyler
Justin Francis is a junior majoring in agribusiness management
and minoring in international agricultural studies. He
is a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and the Collegiate Farm
Bureau. Francis is representing Sigma Alpha. He has a
job out on Roads Farm. “I know a lot of the Sigma
girls. I had a personal connection,” Francis said
on being nominated. By winning, he would be honored to
represent the CAFNR. For the future, he plans on graduating
in 2008 and going into agricultural sales, a farm business,
international business, or the Chicago Trade. |

Travis
Dean Heman is a junior majoring in agricultural systems
management and minoring in agricultural economics. He
is involved in Alpha Gamma Rho, the Collegiate Farm Bureau,
Alpha MU, Alpha Zeta, Outreach Mizzou Student Recruitment
Team, Missouri Cattleman's Association, and the Missouri
Junior Limousine Association. He is representing Alpha
Gamma Rho. During the summer, he had an internship with
Sydenstricker Implement and continued to work there during
the school year. He said he is very privileged to be nominated
as a king candidate. “I plan to represent Alpha
Gamma Rho to the best of my ability,” Heman said.
“CAFNR is something that means a lot to me and plays
a big role in my life, so I would feel very honored if
I were to win king,” he said. His plans for the
future are still wide open as to what career he is looking
for. He worked one internship and plans on working another
this summer to help him make a decision about a career.
After graduation, he would like to remain close to home,
so he can continue to work on the family farm as many
generations have done before him. |

Eric
Christopher Hoffman is a senior majoring in general agriculture.
He is a part of Alpha Gamma Sigma, Collegiate Farm Bureau,
and Grill off Specialist. He is representing Alpha Gamma
Sigma as king candidate. Hoffman raises breeding mules
and works as a lab assistant in the Plant Science Department.
He is honored to represent his organization and this university.
“If I won I would be overwhelmed with joy. In all
seriousness, I would be both delighted and honored to
represent my peers as king,” Hoffman said. In the
future, he plans to start a grass-based Organic Dairy
Farm. |

Jared
Scott Liles is a junior majoring in agribusiness management
and minoring in international agriculture. He is active
with the Agriculture Economics Club and the Agriculture
Future of America. As a king candidate, he is representing
the Agriculture Economics Club. Liles works at HyVee in
the meat department. He said that he is stoked about being
nominated and would feel super stoked if he won. In the
future, he would just like to find a fulfilling, interesting,
and rewarding career in agriculture. |

Tanner
Schmoll Meyer is a sophomore majoring in animal science
and minoring in agricultural systems management. He is
involved with Block and Bridle and the Mizzou FFA Alumni.
He works with Missouri Foundation Seeds. Meyer is representing
Block and Bridle. On being asked how he felt about his
nomination, the honor left him speechless. He says he
would be excited if he won. His plans for the future include
veterinary school. |

Michael
James Ockerhausen is a sophomore majoring in agricultural
education. He is involved with Collegiate Farm Bureau,
CAFNR Ambassadors, and the Agricultural Education Society.
The Collegiate Farm Bureau nominated him as their king
candidate. When he goes home, he works on his family’s
farm. He said he is honored to be nominated for such a
position in order to represent CAFNR. “Being a student
at CAFNR means a lot to me and I am very excited for the
event filled week ahead of me,” Ockerhausen said.
He said if he won, “I would feel very excited and
fortunate all at the same time. It would be a great honor
to represent CAFNR as the 2006 CAFNR Week king.”
Even though he said his plans for the future seem to change
every week, he plans to become a sales or customer relations
representative for a seed or equipment company. |
