During CAFNR week, each club selects one king and one queen candidate. Each candidate must complete a list of requirements to remain in the running as a candidate according to the steering committee. They must:
1. Be at least a third semester student.
2. Take an active part in their club’s skit.
3. Participate in the Lip Sync contest at Skit Night.
4. Participate in the Family Day/Community Service Event.
5. Attend an interview
6. Write an essay and submit a resume.
7. Attend Barnwarming
8. Attend at least three additional activities throughout the week representing their club.

This year’s king candidates are Cory Cawthon, Jared Liles, Bruce Bishop, Mike Ockerhausen, Tyler Francis, Travis Heman, Tanner Meyer, Eric Hoffman, Paul Cowherd, and Matt Brown.

Bruce Foster Bishop II is a junior majoring in Agricultural Systems Management. He is involved with the Independent Aggies, the Agricultural Systems Management club, Block and Bridle, Alpha MU, and the Agronomy club. He is representing the Independent Aggies. He works at the University Bradford farm, does bull dozing, and feeds horses. He is honored he was nominated. He said it has been, “quite an experience.” He said he never thought as a freshman he would be in this position. If he won, he said he would be extremely honored, speechless to say the least. “Honoring the Ag. school in that way would be outstanding,” Bishop said. After his undergraduate studies, he is going for his masters. He hopes to go into sales with equipment, or go into agronomy.
Matthew Derek Brown is a senior majoring in plant science with an emphasis in crop management. The organizations he is involved include the Agronomy Club, CAFNR Ambassadors, Mizzou FFA Alumni, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. The club he represents as king candidate is the CAFNR Ambassadors. He works on campus in Dr. Dale Blevin’s plant physiology lab and at the Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute. He takes the nomination as an honor, and a privilege. “CAFNR is a great college to represent,” he said. “I would feel fortunate to represent CAFNR as the king of CAFNR Week,” Brown said. His plans for the future are to graduate in May. From there, he is not sure. He might continue to work for the Jefferson Institute.
Cory James Cawthon is a sophomore majoring in Biochemistry. He represents the Mizzou Alumni FFA Chapter. He works two part-time jobs, one at the University beef farm and the other at the Bass Pro shop. Cawthon said that he is very excited to be nominated and would be proud to accept the honor of CAFNR week king on behalf of his chapter. In the future, he plans to attend some form of graduate studies program after completing his undergraduate experience.
Paul Emerson Cowherd is a junior majoring in agricultural systems management. He is a part of the Independent Aggies and the Agricultural Systems Management club. He represents the Agricultural Systems Management club. Cowherd works for a farm supplier. “Kind of an honor because I was nominated by a group of girls,” he said on being nominated. When asked how it would feel to win, Cowherd said “That would be kind of a big deal.” In the future, he plans to own a farm, produce farm supplies, or go into owning a dairy farm.
Tyler Justin Francis is a junior majoring in agribusiness management and minoring in international agricultural studies. He is a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and the Collegiate Farm Bureau. Francis is representing Sigma Alpha. He has a job out on Roads Farm. “I know a lot of the Sigma girls. I had a personal connection,” Francis said on being nominated. By winning, he would be honored to represent the CAFNR. For the future, he plans on graduating in 2008 and going into agricultural sales, a farm business, international business, or the Chicago Trade.
Travis Dean Heman is a junior majoring in agricultural systems management and minoring in agricultural economics. He is involved in Alpha Gamma Rho, the Collegiate Farm Bureau, Alpha MU, Alpha Zeta, Outreach Mizzou Student Recruitment Team, Missouri Cattleman's Association, and the Missouri Junior Limousine Association. He is representing Alpha Gamma Rho. During the summer, he had an internship with Sydenstricker Implement and continued to work there during the school year. He said he is very privileged to be nominated as a king candidate. “I plan to represent Alpha Gamma Rho to the best of my ability,” Heman said. “CAFNR is something that means a lot to me and plays a big role in my life, so I would feel very honored if I were to win king,” he said. His plans for the future are still wide open as to what career he is looking for. He worked one internship and plans on working another this summer to help him make a decision about a career. After graduation, he would like to remain close to home, so he can continue to work on the family farm as many generations have done before him.
Eric Christopher Hoffman is a senior majoring in general agriculture. He is a part of Alpha Gamma Sigma, Collegiate Farm Bureau, and Grill off Specialist. He is representing Alpha Gamma Sigma as king candidate. Hoffman raises breeding mules and works as a lab assistant in the Plant Science Department. He is honored to represent his organization and this university. “If I won I would be overwhelmed with joy. In all seriousness, I would be both delighted and honored to represent my peers as king,” Hoffman said. In the future, he plans to start a grass-based Organic Dairy Farm.
Jared Scott Liles is a junior majoring in agribusiness management and minoring in international agriculture. He is active with the Agriculture Economics Club and the Agriculture Future of America. As a king candidate, he is representing the Agriculture Economics Club. Liles works at HyVee in the meat department. He said that he is stoked about being nominated and would feel super stoked if he won. In the future, he would just like to find a fulfilling, interesting, and rewarding career in agriculture.
Tanner Schmoll Meyer is a sophomore majoring in animal science and minoring in agricultural systems management. He is involved with Block and Bridle and the Mizzou FFA Alumni. He works with Missouri Foundation Seeds. Meyer is representing Block and Bridle. On being asked how he felt about his nomination, the honor left him speechless. He says he would be excited if he won. His plans for the future include veterinary school.
Michael James Ockerhausen is a sophomore majoring in agricultural education. He is involved with Collegiate Farm Bureau, CAFNR Ambassadors, and the Agricultural Education Society. The Collegiate Farm Bureau nominated him as their king candidate. When he goes home, he works on his family’s farm. He said he is honored to be nominated for such a position in order to represent CAFNR. “Being a student at CAFNR means a lot to me and I am very excited for the event filled week ahead of me,” Ockerhausen said. He said if he won, “I would feel very excited and fortunate all at the same time. It would be a great honor to represent CAFNR as the 2006 CAFNR Week king.” Even though he said his plans for the future seem to change every week, he plans to become a sales or customer relations representative for a seed or equipment company.
