CAFNR Week is a time of year when students come together and take part in different events sponsored by organizations within the college. This year, an event called the Great Grill-Off was hosted by the Mizzou Collegiate Cattlewomen on Sept. 25th. The MCC is an organization composed of young women who educate others on the importance of the cattle industry as well as facts about beef nutrition. The group was founded about five years ago and is composed of forty members.

The Great Grill-Off included 14 teams competing for the jackpot, which came from the $5 entry fee that each team paid. Each team was required to use beef and could also create sides to go along with their main course. The dishes were judged on taste as well as presentation. Judges this year included local celebrities Keri and Uncle from the Clear 99 Morning Show, as well as Chuck Miller, president of the Boone County Cattlemen.

“This is the kind of event that allows us to promote beef and get involved in CAFNR Week,” said MCC president Katie Allen. Newer groups were out to recruit members and simply become better known to students. Other reasons for participating included the spirit points that were awarded to teams. Every group that had one team participating received 25 points and groups with two teams received 50 points. These points are awarded for participation in activities during CAFNR Week and are added up at the end of the week to find an overall winner.

Another team that participated this year was the Mizzou BBQ Team, who recently beat out 27 professional BBQ teams from the Midwest and were hoping to gain a victory at the Grill-Off. “We signed up just for fun and to get new members,” said the team’s captain, Greg Chase. When asked what their secret was, the BBQ team replied, “it’s in the sauce, it is our seasoning, time, and patience.”

Last year, Alpha Gamma Rho won the competition. Travis Heman from Alpha Gamma Rho said, “We came out this year for bragging rights, fun, and to defend the title.” Jo Wyatt from Sigma Alpha, an agricultural sorority, said, “We’d really like to beat the GDI’s.” Some reasons for showing up were as simple as Alpha Gamma Sigma member, Phillip Boydston’s response, “We like to cook.”

In the end, everyone had a lot of fun and cooked some amazing dishes. Some of the meals prepared for the judges were dishes such as filet mignon, top sirloin steaks, hamburgers, and KC strips.

This year, first place overall was the Mizzou BBQ Team with their filet mignon. The tam included Greg Chase, Brandon Fick, and Chris Flentge as well as team advisor Dr. Clark. The team’s prizes included an engraved grill set from the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, beef aprons from the Missouri Beef Industry Council, and the $70 jackpot. Other winners were Alpha Gamma Rho who came in first in the presentation division, and Alpha Gamma Sigma who came in first in the taste division.
