Thanksgiving
turkeys for sale

Thanksgiving
is right around the corner and a lot of people will soon be
buying turkeys to put on their tables for the big meal. People
can always buy a turkey from the grocery store, but another
option is to buy one from MU’s Food Science Association.
The money that
is collected from the turkey fundraiser will allow food science
students to attend the Institute of Food Technologists Regional
Meeting in Minneapolis, Minn. Food Science Professor, Carol
Lorenzen said the regional meeting is a great way for students
to meet. “[The fundraiser helps to pay for] the big
trip we like the club [FSA] to go to in the spring. It allows
for the club members to meet other food science majors from
other schools like Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas State.”
According to Sara
Crisp, junior Food Science major, “We inject the turkeys
in the breast and thigh with salt/sugar brine, and then soak
them in brine in large vats for three days. The turkeys are
then hardwood smoked, packaged and ready to go.”
“The weight
of the birds range this year from 8 to 12 pounds, so birds
weighing 10 pounds or more will be $25 and birds weighing
8 pounds or less will be $20,” said Crisp. Fresh turkeys
can be kept fresh for three weeks from the time they are picked
them up. Turkeys ordered through the FSA can either be ordered
fresh or frozen and come with instructions and cooking times.
Turkeys can be
reserved anytime until November 14 by contacting Sara Crisp
at secr2f@mizzou.edu.
