Rain and cool temperatures did not keep students, staff and
faculty from heading out to the CAFNR Fall Festival on Thursday,
Oct. 26. Food, games and door prizes were available for the
event which was held in Trowbridge Livestock Center Arena
from 11 to 1 p.m.
The Fall Festival gives CAFNR students and faculty a chance
to get to know one another outside of the classroom. “I
enjoy being able to talk with my professors in a laid back
atmosphere,” said Doug Ludwig, MU graduate student.
“Events such as this allow students to get to know their
professors and the staff.”
Sponsored by the CAFNR Staff Advisory Council, participants
enjoyed chili, cream of broccoli soup, rolls, vegetables with
dip, desserts and refreshments. While eating, students and
faculty where encouraged to participate in games. “We
have a gourd toss, hillbilly golf, washers and a plant walk
set up in the middle of the arena for students and faculty
members to participate in,” said James Kaufman, Staff
Advisory Council member.
Mums and various plants where lined up on top of straw hay
bales for winners of the plant walk to choose from. “Participants
in the plant walk play musical chairs, with the winner receiving
a plant,” said Rita Gerke, past Staff Advisory Council
member.
Mike Quinata, president of the Staff Advisory Council announced
door prize winners at the festival. Prizes included gift certificates
for various amounts to Breaktime gas stations. Faculty and
students also entered their guesses for the amount of candy
in a jar for a prize.
Encouraged by the Staff Advisory Council to dress for Halloween,
students and faculty participated in a costume party. Dr.
Jinglu Tan and Dr. Jim Spain judged the contestants based
on their costumes. Third place went to Dean Payne, who dressed
as Zorro. Michelle Pruyt, clothed in all green as “Think
Green,” received second place. Taking first place was
Dennis Murphy, as a New Orleans dish, wearing a hat of red
beans and holding a photographed face of Condaleza Rice. “My
wife and I recently attended a costume party where she was
Rice and I was beans,” said Murphy.
To conclude the festival, the council had a Mad Pumpkin Dash.
Attendees of the festival were encouraged to dash for pumpkins
arranged in the middle of the arena.
