With
the conclusion of CAFNR Week 2006, came the end of the change
wars competition. Students, staff and faculty members where
challenged by the CAFNR Week Steering Committee to collect
change for their club or organization throughout the week
as a friendly competition to raise money for charity.
Christine
Tew, community service/education committee co-chair announced
GDI as the winning club on Friday evening during the Barnwarming
celebration at the Blue Note. GDI collected a total of 113.25
pounds of change throughout the week. Alpha Gamma Rho came
in second with 100.5 pounds and Alpha Gamma Sigma donated
92 pounds to place third. A grand total of 428.75 pounds of
change was collected by the clubs and organizations of CAFNR.
It is estimated by the committee that the 428.75 pounds of
change will be in the $600 range, but the exact amount of
change will not be known until it is delivered to the bank
this coming week. GDI president Ryan Power said, “The
club will donate the 428.75 pounds of change raised to St.
Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.”
The change
wars competition is the newest addition to CAFNR Week, organized
by the Community Service and Education Committee as an opportunity
to donate to the charity chosen by the winning organization.
“The committee was looking for a way to raise money
that would be fair to clubs of all sizes and financial standings.
Change Wars looked like a way to spark some friendly competition,”
said Tew.
Organizations
brought their Ziploc bags full of change to events sponsored
by the CAFNR Week Steering Committee, including Family Agriculture
Day, Skit Night, Speaker Night, and Barnwarming. “All
organizations that participate by raising the minimum number
of pounds will receive CAFNR Week spirit points.” Tew
said. “Using weight, rather than dollars raised, as
a measurement makes the rank a little bit more interesting.”
