This weekend Mizzou’s campus will be decorated with millions of pieces
of tissue paper in one of the many competitions during Homecoming. The decorations
will be mounted throughout Greek town as part of the Homecoming festivities.
The house
decorations have been under construction in fraternity houses
for the last month. Homecoming pairs of fraternities and sororities
have already put
in hours of pomping. Some Greeks have a required total number of hours and
others have a certain number of hours required per week.
These decorations
are constructed upon large boards, which are then covered in
thousands of ‘pomps.’ ‘Pomps’ are small pieces of tissue
paper wrapped around a pencil, a marker, a finger, or another cylindrical item
and dipped in a batter of flour and water that serves as glue. These pomps are
placed in patterns using dozens of colors and schemes in order to decorate the
houses in a variety of themes.
“House decorations are hard work but worth it to continue the great tradition
Mizzou has in Homecoming,” freshman Kevin Roepe, Alpha Gamma Rho, said.
The house
decorations will be on display from 6-10 p.m. Friday evening.
Viewing is free and open to the public. .
