Teams from CAFNR participate in knowledge bowl
By Chris Matthews

Five teams from the College of Agriculture Food and Natural Resources participated in the knowledge bowl on Thursday as part of ongoing CAFNR week events.

The Agricultural Education Society sponsored the knowledge bowl according to Erin Carl, secretary.

It looked like it was going to be a small showing for the event, but a large number of students showed up right at the beginning of the competition. In all, there were about 25 participants.

Cord Jenkins, president of the Agricultural Education Society, explained that each team has four members and they compete against each other in a double elimination tournament. Teams are asked eleven questions per round with all teams playing two rounds. Teams have 10 seconds to respond to questions. If a team misses a question, the other team is given a chance to answer it. Teams waiting for their turn to play were sent to a room down the hall so they could not hear the questions.

Jessy Bradley, an agricultural education major, said the competition is open to clubs or individuals. Students from outside of CAFNR are also eligible to participate in the knowledge bowl. Bradley said if an individual student wants to play, they would be placed on one of the existing teams.

Questions came from different subjects currently taught within CAFNR. The first round consisted of questions from subjects like agronomy, animal science, biochemistry, agricultural economics and agricultural journalism.

Teams participate in this competition just because they want to compete, says Bradley. The teams are not awarded any special prizes for the event, but they do compete for team pride.

“ It’s more about bragging rights,” Katie Molloy, a junior agricultural journalism student said.

The Independent Aggies were the winners of the competition this year. Team members consisted of Joey Blackburn, Scott Coleman, Michelle Dowel and Andrew Mann.
