CAFNR
well represented in Homecoming

Homecoming is a time-honored tradition here at Mizzou, but it is holding a special
place in CAFNR students’ interests this year. Four CAFNR students are
representing the school in their respective rights. Ben Marshall and Cory
Robinson have been nominated by their organizations for Homecoming King and
James Tvrdy and Joe Don McGaugh are on the Homecoming steering committee.
When Marshall
was nominated by Ag Ed Society and Robinson by Alpha Gamma Rho,
they didn’t expect to make it this far. But with Marshall’s involvement
list including everything from Mizzou FFA Alumni to Truman the Tiger and Robinson’s
including a mission trip to Jamaica and National Society of Collegiate Scholars;
they were highly qualified for the job.
“The process is so rigorous,” Marshall said. “Knowing everyone
was so qualified, I didn’t expect to make it but I knew I had the potential.”
“I had hopes to make it, but as far as expecting to make it, no,” Robinson
said. “I’m just thrilled to be here.”
What makes
it even more special is the fact that there is more than one
person from CAFNR involved.
“It feels awesome,” Robinson said. “I’m from an ag background
and seeing people from that background getting involved makes me proud.”
“Usually, I have to explain what CAFNR is,” Tvrdy said. “It’s
an education for everyone else involved in homecoming to learn about who we are.”
“It shows how good our college is,” Marshall said. “It shows
CAFNR produces kids that step up to the challenge and represent the college to
the fullest potential.”
So far, everyone
has been incredibly busy, gearing up for the festivities, the
steering committee especially.
“There are 11 different sub-committees,” Tvrdy said. “I’m
on Merchandise and Marketing. We design t-shirts and the survival packs and are
also in charge of the group orders.”
All three
agreed that CAFNR students can get more involved in homecoming
without being on a committee or nominated for
king
or queen.
“It may seem like homecoming activities are geared towards fraternities
and sororities, but that’s not true,” Marshall said. “Ever
since Mizzou started homecoming in 1911, they’re looking for more involvement
from students. Talk to upperclassman and go to some of the events.”
“Kids have to realize there’s more out there than ag school,” Robinson
said. “Get out of your comfort zone and meet new people and organizations.”
“It’s pretty easy to get involved. We have information meetings about
homecoming through the year. You can apply to be on a committee as well,” Tvrdy
said. “You don’t have to be Greek to be on steering committee. There
are six or seven people this year that aren’t Greek. One of the goals this
year is to get more non-Greek involvement.”
They can tell
you from experience it’s worth it.
“Knowing you’re helping out the community and CAFNR at the same time
is great. We get to meet the other king and queen candidates along with other
great people,” Marshall said. “It’s been amazing. It hasn’t
sunk in yet.”.
