MU
students "strike" out cancer

The clatter
of bowling pins knocking into one another could be heard throughout
T.A. Brady’s on Nov. 8-10 as students and faculty members
raised money for cancer awareness. Brady’s Bowl Over Cancer
is a philanthropic event sponsored by the Student Union Programming
Board. The event is held in order to raise money for the American
Cancer Society and promote cancer awareness.
“The event was started 6 years ago and we have continued
it since then, hoping to make each year better,” Tomi Toler,
the Bowl Over Cancer committee chairman said.
In 1999, Brian Cook began Brady’s Bowl Over Cancer to increase
cancer responsiveness and education throughout the campus.
This year a variety of teams participated in the open night including
two Mizzou FFA teams representing CAFNR. Other teams included
a team from the union, the rec center, the health center and also
one from Missouri Student’s Association.
“We
don’t do many community service events, so we figured this
would be a great way to give back to the community, while also
having lots of fun,” Sara Muri, a junior agricultural journalism
major and MU FFA member said.
The bowling
competition consisted of over 18 teams each playing through a
double-elimination tournament. Four members made up a team, which
gathered donations before the event began. On the open night,
a team from the union collected the most donations totaling $200.
“One
my favorite parts of the event is watching teammates get excited
about knocking down the Tiger Pins,” Toler said.
Teams were
able to advance through the competition based on their overall
scores and the total amount of donations they collected. For each
set of pins there was a bonus pin called a Tiger Pin, which was
awarded for each dollar donated and was added to their final score.
“Although
we lost, we had a blast while making money for a good cause,”
Muri said.
Each day of
the tournament was a different category. Tuesday night was greek
night, Wednesday was residence hall night, and Thursday night
was open for anyone. The winners for each night included Tau Kappa
Epsilon, Jerry’s Team, and Missouri Unions.
“The
event has been a success each year and hopefully it will keep
getting better,” Toler said. “It’s a fun environment
that supports a great organization.”
