Budget Cuts Affect Spring Registration
Robert Powell, CAFNR Corner Post Staff

Cuts not only in class offerings, but in faculty have given rise to some hardships for this semester's registers. Some had a terrible time trying to get the classes they needed. While others slid seamlessly into the New Year.

"I was surprised how easy it was to get into classes as a freshman," Adam Thomas, ASM major said. Adam seemed confident in Mizzou's system of getting people in the classes when they need them.

"Mizzou's scheduling system works just fine, I had a later scheduling date than most people and only had trouble with one class being closed (English 20), because of a time issue," said Lindsey Penike, an undecided freshman.

Not all shared Adam and Lindsey's success in enrolling. There are those who hate the current StarMU system and who had a mountain of a time getting set up for next term.

"StarMU locked up on me over and over; I was on three computers at once in my dorm computer lab trying to get registered," said Megan Harris, secondary education major. Computer lock ups were not the end of this tale of woe. Two classes Harris needed to be enrolled in were closed due to being filled. "I tried to get an override and that didn't work either," she said.

At the top of all this is academic advisor, Kelly Flint. Flint acknowledged cut backs had been made due to budget cuts and a higher enrollment. This quickly explained the lack of open seats in classes like English 20. She was unmoved by the quick closing of English 20, saying it was "normal." Flint said, "In all hopes, the worst of the cuts is over."

When asked about her thoughts on StarMU, she stood behind the system. Improvements are in line to be made to the system such as the ability of students to more readily find out if classes are open. Good news for those who show up to their advisors with high hopes only to have them dashed.

The registry system is imperfect, though improvements are on the way. Students will always have problems getting into some hot ticket classes, there is little to change that.
