New Home for Ham Sale
Megan Cooper, Corner Post Staff

February 10, 2004 - A new location didn't stand in the way of having a great ham sale for the MU Block and Bridle club this year. The annual ham sale took place on February 4th, 2004 at the Show Me Ag Classic in the Hearnes Center Field House. Usually the sale takes place at the fall festival, but because of its discontinuation, the club was not able to hold their sale at that time this year.

Having a ham sale is something the club has been doing for a very long time.

"It has become sort of a tradition," Luke Miller, Block and Bridle ham co-chair, said.

And, these aren't just ordinary hams; Block and Bridle's members have specially cured them. The money made from the hams is a major fundraiser for the club and is used for founding trips and events.

This year there were 15 hams in all and the top four hams were auctioned off at 12:30 pm at the Show Me Ag Classic. The remaining 11 hams were sold for fifty dollars a piece. The top four hams were picked by Greg Rentfrow, MU's meats team coach.

The champion ham in the heavy weight division went to Greg Meier, senior animal science major. His ham was bought by Helen Swartz for $200. The reserve champion heavy weight ham went to Kristy Sparks, senior nutrition/fitness major, and was bought by Bill Riggins for $225. The champion light weight ham went to Eric Adkins, senior animal science major. His ham was bought by Tom Henderson for $175.The reserve champion light weight ham went to Audra Jones, senior animal science and nutrition/fitness major, and was bought by Bill Riggins for $175.

"We were happy with the outcome," Kristy Sparks, Block and Bridle ham co-chair said. "We sent out a lot more fliers this year and dressed it up a bit. We thought it was very successful for the first year at a new location."
