Emerging
Leaders Program Comes to CAFNR
Meghan Stewart, Corner Post Staff
February 1, 2004 - The Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a program offered
to help recognize and develop the leadership potential of college students.
Last fall Rob Terry wanted something that would help the leadership of
younger and older College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources students,
and with the help of Trent Engbers and Megan Warner ELP was revamped and
brought to CAFNR.
ELP is a program that has been at Mizzou for the past five years but CAFNR
is the first school to make it their own.
"I commend the College of Agriculture for being on the cutting edge of
leadership development," said Trent Engbers.
ELP pairs freshman and sophomores with junior and senior mentors. Together
they come up with leadership programs that they feel will benefit them
or the school. The mentors will help guide the students with their programs
but all decisions about what they do are left up to the students.
They meet every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. The program can be taken
as a one-hour credit course or just for the personal benefit of the student.
The program was started the fall of 2003, and the mentors were selected
over winter break. ELP had there first meeting on January 27 where six
of the participants and four mentors were present of the fifteen members
participating this year.
"I hope one day all freshman CAFNR students will be involved in ELP,"
said Coordinator Rob Terry.
