College
Introduces Ag Scholars Program
Natalie Scherer, CAFNR Cornerpost
The MU AgScholars Program is a new program designed to attract students to the
food-animal science practice field. This program will also provide students with
veterinary medicine mentors.
Students enrolled in the program will complete a more intensive and structured
undergraduate curriculum than the average pre-vet student. This curriculum will
provide information in the fields of basic nutrition, livestock production and
quantitative reasoning.
"In essence, this program provides early assurance of admission to the MU College
of Veterinary Medicine to selected students pursuing an undergraduate degree
in Animal Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia," said George Jesse,
professor of animal science.
Animal science majors who successfully complete the program are guaranteed acceptance
to the MU College of Veterinary Medicine.
Eligibility
1. High school seniors and MU freshmen with an ACT composite score of 27 or higher
or an equivalent SAT score.
2. Have demonstrated experience or interest in livestock production and health.
Examples of appropriate experience may include participation in a livestock enterprise
as either a family member or an employee; enrollment in at least two years of
high school agricultural coursework; and participation in FFA, 4H or equivalent
organizations with projects directly related to livestock production or health.
Students who do not meet these standards will be admitted if they agree to complete
an internship in the summer between their freshman and sophomore years of their
undergraduate training. This internship must entail at least 250 hours of supervised
experience in livestock production or a livestock health enterprise.
