Peace Corps Recruitment runs out of room
By Tina Cook, Corner Post staff

“This is the largest turn-out I have ever had at a place like this,” said Mark Kittrell after his Peace Corps Recruitment meeting was moved to accommodate over 50 people who arrived on February 10, at 6 p.m. for information on volunteering opportunities offered through Peace Corps and how to apply.

Peace Corps offers volunteer placement in 132 countries for 28-month periods. Kittrell said that at least six months is needed for all paper work to be filed so potential applicants should apply up to a year ahead of their expected entrance into a program.

All experience is evaluated for qualification including hobbies, paid jobs, volunteer work and education. If an applicant is accepted, they are nominated for a position and are sent a packet of information with medical and legal release forms. Only after completion of these forms is an applicant offered a position and their specific job and site is chosen.

Benefits for Peace Corps volunteers include no out of pocket expenses; over $6,000 in re-adjustment allowance upon return, deferment of student loans, full medical and dental coverage, education opportunities and financial assistance after returning.

Applications can be found online at http://peacecorp.gov/.
