Givestrong-a-thon held to support fight against cancer
By: Cat Vaughn, Corner Post staff
The Givestrong-a-thon fundraiser for the Lance Armstrong Foundation
kicked off its 12 hour cardio-thon at 7 p.m., Friday, February 4 at
the MU Recreational Center. The cardio-thon was held to raise $5,000
for cancer research and educate people about cancer through the Lance
Armstrong Foundation.
Givestrong-a-thon was hosted by Omicron Delta Kappa and organized by
Cliff Judy, a senior at the university.
“
Our goal was $5,000 but we actually only raised about $3,300 after
expenses,” Judy said.
While the financial goal was not achieved, the turnout of the cardio-thon
was impressive.
“
A 160 people signed up to participate,” Judy said, “but
then we also had walk-ins who probably brought the number up to 180.”
The cardio-thon ran from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday morning. The participants
had signed up in teams of 12. No participant was required to stay the
whole 12 hours as long as another team member was present and active.
Food, t-shirts and entertainment were provided for the participants.
Comedy Wars performed and movies were shown on the new flat screen
televisions in the cardio theater.
The Givestrong-a-thon was an opportunity for people to come together
to support the fight against cancer. The money raised from the cardio-thon
will be given to the Lance Armstrong Foundation to help the battle
against cancer.
