No start day dance this semester The Start Day and Stop Day dances hosted by the Independent Aggies are as much of an institution in CAFNR as any of the other events held by student groups throughout the year. The last time a dance was called off happened so long ago that no current members of the organization are unaware of it ever happening. That was the case until Winter Semester 2005 with the cancellation of the Start Day Dance. Inability to find a suitable location led to the event not being held. “We have such a large attendance at our dances anymore that it’s hard to find buildings that are suitable for us to use,” said Clint Kendrick, the group’s fundraising chair in charge of the dances. Kendrick said the group, better known by the nickname GDI, has between 60 and 70 members. But about 700 people attended the last dance. He said issues relating to the crowds complicated finding a location. “It’s not membership in the organization at all, by any means. There’s always just a handful of people… that can screw it up for everybody,” Kendrick said. “We’ve had problems with stealing and a little bit of vandalism. It’s never more than a handful of people, but unfortunately it costs the whole group.” Kendrick said the group is still planning to hold a Stop Day Dance, provided a location can be found. “We hope everyone is looking forward to it,” Kendrick said. The dances have led a nomadic existence since the closing of longtime
home Goodtime Country in 2002. Various locations including the Boone
County Fairgrounds and Kemper Arena of Columbia have held subsequent
dances. © 2005 CAFNR Corner Post |
