Agricultural
Systems Management Club
By James McNary, Corner Post staff
You may have
seen one of them wearing a “Tractors
Are Cool” t-shirt on campus. Or you may have seen the farm equipment
they set up outside Memorial Union during what was once called Ag Week.
Or you may have gotten stuck behind the caravan of equipment after
the Little Expo when they take it back to the dealership that night.
These folks are known as the Agricultural Systems Management Club,
more commonly called the ASM Club. This group is the successor
to the Ag-Mech Club of years
gone by.
Fascinated by hydraulics, structures or welding? These and more are what ASM
majors study at MU.
The ASM Club is open to anyone majoring, minoring or interested in such pursuits.
The organization gives students opportunities to go overseas, teach children
about the growing mechanics and safety in agriculture, and meet students with
a similar interest.
One of the most active and well-known clubs in the College of Agriculture,
Food and Natural Resources, the ASM Club holds a lawnmower clinic each spring,
and
they sponsor the Little Expo and Road Rally during CAFNR Week. Little Expo
is the exhibition of farm machinery outside Memorial Union.
Club members plan a trip each spring to visit leading manufacturing companies
in the Midwest. They also plan an international trip over winter break. In
recent years, they have traveled to Germany, Brazil and Costa Rica.
Guest speakers at the club’s monthly meetings give members more information
on careers in the field. Students can also participate in Alpha Mu, the honor
society for ASM students.
Most meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 6:30 p.m.,
in 105 Ag Engineering Building. Dues are $5 a semester, and t-shirts are available
to anyone for $15. At most meetings there are refreshments of which attendees
can partake.
Anyone interested in joining can just come to a meeting. For more information
contact President David Strobel at drsfff@mizzou.edu or the faculty advisor,
Dr. Leon Schumcher, at SchumacherL@missouri.edu.
