Block and Bridle kicks off Spring Break with steer and heifer show
By Katie Allen, Corner Post staff

Missouri youth beef exhibitors Rachael Carlson and Dusty Hays took top honors at the annual Block and Bridle Steer and Heifer Show March 19-20 at Midway Expo Center, Columbia, Mo. This was the first show of the year, open only to Missouri junior exhibitors.

At the conclusion of the heifer show March 19, Carlson’s Champion Maine-Anjou heifer was selected as the Grand Champion Heifer. Carlson received a fitting mat and $800 for grand champion honors.
Reserve Grand Champion Heifer was awarded to Tyler Alden with his Champion Shorthorn heifer. Alden was also awarded a fitting mat and $600.

The following day, Hays’ Champion Crossbred steer took the Grand Champion Steer title, a fitting mat and $800.

Alden once again took reserve honors when his Reserve Champion Crossbred steer was selected as the Reserve Grand Champion Steer. This steer won Alden an additional fitting mat and $600.

A showmanship competition followed both the heifer and steer shows. Showmen ages 8-12 exhibited in the junior division, 13-15 in the intermediate division and 16-21 in the senior division.

Heifer showmanship winners included Mallory Early in the junior division, Brittany Early in the intermediate division and Rachel McGilvray in the senior division.

Steer showmanship winners were Kaitlin Lee in the junior division, Kielly Jewell in the intermediate division and Valerie Edmondson in the senior division.

Each showmanship winner received a photo plaque, picture and show stick.

Jeremy Hahn of Illinois judged this year’s heifer, steer and showmanship competitions.

Gold sponsors of the show included Alpha Gamma Rho, Klingner Farms, Independent Aggies and Sydenstricker Genetics. The digital scales for weighing the steers were provided by MFA. Orscheln Farm and Home donated the wood chips, and Pearl Wathall served as the show photographer.

The Block and Bridle Club also raffled off a fitting blower throughout the two-day show. The winner, announced during the champion steer drive, was Justin Schroder.

Now that the show is complete, Block and Bridle is planning a species trip to southern Missouri April 1-3. The club will tour various types of farm structures on their trip. The club will hold a milk-a-cow booth in April as well.
