Block and Bridle to hold annual steer and heifer show
By Katie Allen, Corner Post staff
The University of Missouri - Columbia Block and Bridle Club will
hold their annual steer and heifer show March 19-20, 2005, at Midway
Expo Center, Columbia, Mo.
More than 300 head of cattle are expected to show this year. Exhibitors may
show their steers and heifers in the Angus, Charolais, Chianina, Hereford,
Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Simmental, Shorthorn, All Other Breeds and Crossbred
divisions.
The Block and Bridle Steer and Heifer Show is the first show of the year that
is open only to Missouri junior exhibitors said Lacy Jewell, a tri-chair for
the show.
“
It (show) is the initial outing to see whose calves will be competitive for
the following summer without out-of-state competition,” Jewell said.
The Block and Bridle Club sent previous exhibitors entry forms in the mail.
Exhibitors may also find entry forms at their county extension offices, FFA
chapters or online.
Anyone can pay a late registration fee the weekend of the show as well.
Cattle may arrive at Midway Expo Center beginning 8 a.m., Friday, March 18.
Registration begins at 1 p.m., and all heifers must be in place by 9 p.m.
The heifer show begins at 9 a.m., Saturday, March 19. Showmanship will immediately
follow the heifer show, and heifers will then be released. At 2 p.m., steer
weigh-ins will begin, and all steers must be in place by 6 p.m.
The steer show will begin at 9 a.m., Sunday, March 20, with showmanship immediately
following the show.
This year, breed champions will receive trophies, while reserve breed champions
will receive feed pans. Show sticks and photo plaques will be awarded to showmanship
winners, and the overall champion steer and heifer will win fitting mats and
a cash prize.
Jewell, along with other tri-chairs Sara Rechterman and Amanda Liles, have
been working hard to prepare for the show since last fall. This year is the
second year Jewell and Rechterman have served as tri-chairs, while Liles is
in her first year.
“As a junior exhibitor myself, it was interesting to see how much work
really goes on prior to the shows to prepare for so many people,” Jewell
said. “This year has been much easier after having a year of experience
as a tri-chair.”
Rechterman encourages anyone interested in the show to come watch next weekend.
“
We (tri-chairs) would be more than happy to see everyone out watching the show
on March 19 and 20,” Rechterman said.
