Controversial Name Change anticipates best for CAFNR
By Cat Vaughn, Corner Post staff

Last week the decision to change Ag week to CAFNR week passed. This decision officially changes the name of the week that was originally run through the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

The name change is to encourage all students and faculty throughout CAFNR to participate in the events of the week.

CAFNR week is the last weekend in September. The week is led by the CAFNR Steering Committee. Applications for next year’s steering committee are open. Tri Directors Corey Black, Katie Malloy and Jessica Bradley are currently looking for prospective students who wish to better CAFNR week.

But what does CAFNR week entail? Booths set up in Lowry mall are meant to display the growth and development the agriculture field is undergoing.

Corey Black, one of the Tri Directors, said, “We also try to promote community service” during the week.

In previous years, students and faculty have participated in a Cleanup the Katy Trail service project. However, next year instead of the Katy trail, CAFNR hopes to host club based activities, such as a cook-off with food science.

How do people feel about the name change? Black said, “You still have your hardcore aggies who wish to keep the name ‘Ag’ because they wish to keep it specific.”

However, the current Tri Directors’ goal is to open up the former Ag week to everyone. “The new name is more inviting,” Black said.

Besides opening up doors, the new name change anticipates a whole new respect for CAFNR.

“A lot of faculty and staff looked down on Ag week as a dark shadow towards the school, because it seemed like a joke. There was no purpose for it. This year we’re trying to establish it,” said Black.

Changing the name helps to bring together all fields in CAFNR. By doing this the college is opening themselves up to potential new sponsors and greater scholarships from the university.

Hopefully, the new name will bring new and better changes for CAFNR week and the college itself.
