Joe Golding: Professor for a Day
By Sarah Davis, Corner Post staff

Mizzou graduate, Joe Golding returns after 21 years to share experiences with students and faculty as professor for a day. Friday, Oct. 22, Golding talked with several individuals including marketing and agriculture economics students, and NAMA members.

“The professor for a day program has it’s goal to bring CAFNR graduates back to campus to share information about their careers and current employment and gives students and faculty insight in today’s job market and learn from interesting, successful alumni,” said Ken Schneeberger, Assistant Dean of Special Programs.

The program is part of the College’s Development-Advancement effort.

Golding, a CAFNR graduate, was very successful in sales and marketing with a large container company. After 20 years, he established his own company as well as several subsidiaries in the marketing, employee training and public relations areas. The company, Differentiation Strategies, Inc. has been a wonderful way for Golding and his wife to expand their knowledge and ideas in amazing ways. The company is very complex and has a high success rate.

Differentiation Strategies, Inc. is a source of training and communication. They help to create a strategic solution that will contribute to success and profitability of a business. The cross-functional team includes instructional designers, graphic designers, video producers, web designers, and researchers all working together in one office.

When Golding visited with students and faculty, he had a key element that he wanted to leave with them. The key was that by working hard enough and being efficient with what your doing, you will prosper. Golding explained that in today’s society students are not getting enough communication skills. Communications skills such as writing abilities, proper speaking, and most of all, spelling, Golding feels should be polished by the time you hit college.

As a marketing and public relativist, Golding made it clear that taking opportunities, such as studying abroad, is very important. He also seemed to be very demanding on the fact that sales is the best area to get experience in.

“Sharing experiences and entrepreneurship marketing theory was a big part of the days talks,” Golding said. Golding felt that throwing out ideas and hearing student’s responses was the rewarding part of the day.

“We want our students to see that there are many different career options and career paths,” Schneeberger said.

The program is set up to have 2 graduates back each semester. The objective is to have grads from across the College. The next professor for a day will be Susan Barr, a 1984 graduate of Hotel Restaurant Management. She will be here Nov. 4-5, mostly interacting in HRM and Food Science. Barr is Regional Vice President of Marriott Corp, the international hotel and food chain and food company.
