Round 'Em Up
By Michelle Chadwick, Corner Post Staff

Every year the CAFNR Student Council holds a Fall Round-Up to let freshman and transfer students know what organizations are available to them. This year the event was at 5:30 p.m., Thursday Sept. 9, 2004, in the new Life Sciences Center and was deemed a success by Jared Verdaught, President of CAFNR Student Council.

Over 250 freshmen and transfer students participated in the 2004 Fall Roundup. The event was cordinated by CAFNR Student Council and sponsored by Tyson Foods, Missouri Corn Growers Assn. and Missouri Farm Bureau.

Dr. Jim Spain, Interm Assistant Dean of CAFNR, began the evening by welcoming the students.

“Each of knows the difference between a KU cheerleader and an Angus heifer… about 50 pounds,” Spain said.

Representatives from Tyson provided a tasty meal and hurled rubber chickens into the crowd.

A majority of CAFNR organizations were represented at the event. Each club provided students with information about themselves and encouraged people to join or at least come to a meeting.

“It has broadened my horizons about the different organizations and clubs,” said Matt Osborn, a freshman who attended the round-up.

Cord Jenkins, a coordinator of Fall Round-Up, said he was pleased with the turnout of about 250 to 300 students attending. When asked what it takes to prepare for this every year he said that it takes a lot of planning, coordination and help.

“I’m thankful that I had a great committee,” Jenkins said.

The Missouri Corn Growers Association and Missouri Farm Bureau also helped sponsor the event. Without them the 2004 Fall Round-Up would not have been possible.
