Berkeley scientist to speak at MU
Compiled by Corner Post Staff
Ignacio Chapela, a University of California-Berkeley, professor and
a controversial figure in the international biotechnology debate, will
speak on "A Century Without Biology: Biotechnology and the Suppression
of Scientific Inquiry," Sept. 27, on the MU campus.
The event, organized by Students for Progressive Action, begins at
7:30 p.m. in Ellis Auditorium, in Ellis Library.
Chapela’s research on genetically modified corn DNA reaching
the wilds of Mexico was first published in the journal Nature. The
journal’s editors were later critical of Chapela’s conclusions,
as other scientists called his research into question.
His speech on the controversy over genetically modified plants comes
on the heels of the grand opening of the MU Life Sciences Center.
