Preview Mizzou Sets New Record
By Jaclyn DeWeese, Corner Post Staff

Nearly 500 high school students attended the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources’ Preview Mizzou on Monday, Oct. 4, 2004.

“Preview Mizzou 2004 has drawn in the largest crowd yet,” said CeCe Leslie, CAFNR’s Student Recruitment Coordinator .
This annual event is held for high school students so they can explore CAFNR, learn about academic programs, tour campus, and meet with current students and faculty.

Stotler Lounge in Memorial Union overflowed with prospective students for the welcoming session. Many students were moved to Jesse Wrench Auditorium because of the large crowd. It caused the welcoming staff to filter between the two auditoriums. Despite this challenge, CAFNR’s faculty was excited to see such a large turnout at Preview Mizzou.

Welcoming staff included Jared VerDught, CAFNR Student Council President,; Dr. Tom Payne, Dean of CAFNR; and Dr. Jim Spain, Assistant Dean. Roy Robinson, Director of International Programs, explained the study abroad opportunities that range from Australia to Costa Rica. Stephanie Chipman, Director of Career Services, and CeCe Leslie also invited students to explore CAFNR.

“It’s not everyday that you see energetic and smiling deans at 8:00 in the morning,” said Lauren Manson, a junior at Brunswick High School. “They really made me feel welcome and comfortable at Mizzou.”

Prospective students attended a Mizzou Fair to visit representatives from Admissions and Student Organizations. “I enjoyed being able to learn more about MU and ask questions (at the Mizzou Fair),” said Mark Meyer a senior at Sweet Springs.

Students also had the opportunity to attend academic sessions to learn about CAFNR’s academic majors. Ten of CAFNR’s 15 majors were highlighted during the sessions in which prospective students could talk with current students and staff. “I was able to talk with professors and learn what classes will really be like,” said Lonnie Farrington, a senior at New Cambria..

To finalize the day, students were taken on campus tours and to a dining hall location for dinner. Zackary Reusler a senior at Jackson High School enjoyed the tours and said, “I was able to get a feel for the campus, and Preview Mizzou helped me realize that MU is for me.”
