Ag Week goes out with a Bang
By Tyne Morgan, Corner Post Staff

Every year, the busiest week at Mizzou for Ag students wraps up with Barnwarming. Two seniors were crowned and received the honor of being the centennial Barnwarming royalty; Lorin Price was crowned Queen and Jared Verdught, King.

“I had a great time at barnwarming and in my opinion it was one of the best that I have been to!” Nathan White said.

Students were transported to the Barnwarming dance on buses to Midway. A DJ provided entertainment throughout the evening. There was also a cash bar and snacks for attendees. The king and queen were crowned during Barnwarming, as well as other winners from the various Ag Week activities.

Andrea Loyd described what the responsibilities were for each candidate.

“Each organization is responsible for selecting their candidates in any fashion they may chose,” Loyd said. “Candidates must be at least third semester students at MU. Once selected, candidates must participate in the community service event, their club's skit during Skit Night, a lip sync during Skit Night, an interview, the Barnwarming dance, three other events during Ag Week, and they also must complete a resume and essay based on how they would promote Ag Week as the Barnwarming king/queen focusing on the theme: Looking to the Past, Building For the Future.”

For the Queen Essay Contest Molly Quinn, Alpha Gamma Rho took first; Lorin Price who represented MU Ambassadors took second; and Crystal Mathews of FFA Alumni placed third. For the interviews, Price first; Matthews second; and Quinn third. Overall, Matthews was second runner-up for Queen, and Quinn first runner-up.

The King and Queen are awarded this title by earning the most points during Ag Week. Points were awarded for attending all of the required events and extra points are awarded for attending comedy night, and for placing in the top three for interviews and essays.

For the King Essay Contest, Jared Verdught of Alpha Gamma Rho placed first; Brad Detring of Collegiate Farm Buruea took second; and Ryan Pearcy representing FFA Alumni placed third. For the interviews, Verdught placed first; Adam Brinker representing Ag Econ Club placed second; and Detring placed third. Overall, Pearcy was second runner-up and Detring first runner-up.

Awards were also presented to clubs that participated in Ag Week. Collegiate Cattlewomen placed first during Skit Night and the overall spirit award went to GDI followed by Alpha Gamma Rho, then Sigma Alpha placing third.

Before Barnwarming, a Bar-B-Q was held, and anyone who purchased a Barnwarming ticket got a free meal before the dance. The Bar-B-Q was provided my Premium Standard Farms, as well as other donors and the menu included butterfly pork chops, beans, potato salad, and cookies from Jack’s Gourmet.
