Since 1910, approximately 1,000 students have joined the University of Missouri Livestock Judging team. The team travels through 18 states on average, judging 600 classes of livestock which includes beef cattle, swine, and sheep, and practices 30 hours a week. Membership is open to any junior or senior of any major who has taken the required Livestock Evaluation course. On November 15, 2004, the team will be participating in the national championship contest held in Louisville, KY. On his expectations for the upcoming competition head coach Chip Kemp said “Our hope is to not beat ourselves, not to overanalyze or over think, to come off the floor in solid shape and aim for a top ten finish.” The team will also be competing in competitons at the World Beef Expo, Premier Stockman, and the American Royal over the next two months. “Our hopes are for a
top ten finish, there is so much luck involved, and if things
fall our way then it is possible. We want to bring back the
Mizzou Livestock Judging tradition,” Kemp said about
the teams chances at the American Royal, a contest held in
Kansas City, MO. The spring contest season kicked off with a 8th place team and individual finish at Express Ranches in Oklahoma. The team was then took place in the carload competition at National Western in Denver, CO. They also placed 8th, in ranking, at Sioux Falls, SD; 8th place at the Iowa Beef Expo; 11th place at Houston; and 3rd place at the Purdue Block and Bridle Contest. Over the summer, they planned and conducted a 3-day Livestock Judging Camp for 50 youngster’s right here on the MU campus. Members of the 2004 MU Livestock
