Activities such as research center field days provide prospective students, alumni,
agriculture-related consultants and farmers a chance to get together once a year,
to discuss the problems and great opportunities of the farming area.
On Tuesday, September 2, 2003, the University of Missouri Delta Center held its
42nd annual Field Day, at the Rone Exhibit Hall, located in The Delta Research
and Extension Center, in Portageville, Missouri. The day was full of important
guest speakers such as Congresswoman JoAnn Emerson and Congressman Kenny Hulshof.
Professors from MU were present as well. They included Dr. Michael Boyd, Dr.
Craig Chisolm, and Dr Gene Stevens among others.
“The purpose of the field days really varies from providing information about
the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CAFNR) in the University to
prospective students, but also people throughout the community are invited," said
CeCe Leslie, coordinator for CAFNR student recruitment.
"It is a major Outreach and Extension effort to inform farmers and other
interested parties on all the latest that is going on in the agriculture world,” continued
Leslie.
Leslie said MU hopes to gain many things from the field day activities. Possibly
the most important objective is to deliver the latest research information to
producers, consultants and the agriculture industry. MU also hopes to promote
the importance of a strong, locally-directed research facility to local officials.
