Dickinson & Brown
Scholar Programs Near
Kelly Connett, CAFNR Corner Post
November 17, 2003- Many of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources
students are unaware of opportunities that can be possible from programs through
the college. Two great programs that often go unnoticed are the Dickinson and
John Brown Scholar programs. These programs offer CAFNR students the chance to
relate the information they have learned in the classroom to the real world of
agriculture business. This event can help students add value to what they are
learning in the classroom, and also give students a new view of possible career
choices after graduation.
The Dickinson Scholar program is available to CAFNR sophomores and juniors that
want to become familiar with the Kansas City agribusiness society. The Dickinson
Scholar program is five days long that consists of two two-day internships. Participants
also visit the Kansas City Board of Trade as well as the Federal Reserve Bank.
In the evening, students will get to meet CAFNR alumni that work in or around
the Kansas City area and be around principal Kansas City companies and agribusiness
leaders. These opportunities allow students to experience great networking occasions.
The qualifications you must have to apply to be a part of the Dickinson Scholar
program are as follows: be interested in agribusiness, be a CAFNR sophomore or
junior, and have completed Ag Econ 41 and 42.
The John Brown Scholar program is the other great experience that CAFNR offers.
John E. Brown was a well-known important agribusiness man in St. Louis. He started
this program in 1983 for qualified juniors and seniors in CAFNR interested in
agribusiness. The Brown program is like the Dickinson program, except that it
takes place in St. Louis rather than Kansas City.
In January, the participants will travel to Kansas City and St. Louis and be
split into several smaller groups that will be appointed to a host firm. During
the week, students will get to be on a personal level with business associates
and interact in a corporate setting. The understanding of how to take what they
learn in the classroom and use it to solve industry problems is one of the many
skills that students will be able to take away from this experience. The students
will also take part in evening lectures and seminars throughout the week. A different
subject will be conversed each night that might help the student's future in
the corporate world. This program is funded by the MU John E. Brown Scholarship
fund and students are expected to pay a small amount as well.
To take part in the Dickinson or Brown Scholar programs in the future all you
need to do is fill out an application. It then goes on to a selection committee
that will review all the applications and make a final selection. The applications
for these programs were due last week and this year's selections will be announced
before Thanksgiving break The recipients will be posted on Corner Post. \
