Raising money for you
Robert Powell, Corner Post Staff

Six hundred million dollars is to be raised throughout the entire university by December 31, 2005. Thirty five million is to be raised by CAFNR. This is “not at all in response to the resent budget cuts,” said Kristen Smarr, Director of External Relations. The fundraiser has been in the works for over two years and is just now moving into the public phase.

CAFNR is following suit with the rest of the university dividing the funds into four broad areas: student support, faculty support, program support, and facilities. Through this fundraiser, students will benefit with $4.5 million going toward endowments for scholarships and another $1.5 million going for global educational experiences (study abroad).

Faculties are to benefit greatly as well. Seven and a half million are to go to private gifts to endow faculty positions and research assistance. Not only will these endowments directly help the faculty have the ability to teach more and better classes, $14 million is to go directly to supporting a broader variety of classes and disciplines.

Lastly the facilities will benefit from this multi-million dollar fundraiser. Six million dollars is to go to improving CAFNR’s farms and centers. Upgrades will be made to our current labs and renovations of current buildings. “There are no plans right now to build new buildings with this money,” said Kristen Smarr.

The steering committee for this consists of 21 people that will coordinate and give directions to the fundraiser. The committee will coordinate their efforts also through the Office of Advancement, located in 2-4 Agriculture. They will be glad to answer further questions.
