On Wednesday, November 19, the Department of Residential Life and Campus Dining Services hosted the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the College Avenue Bridge in the Bingham Connection Dining Facility. The ceremony opened with a few words from Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dr.Cathy Scroggs.

“ This has been a long time coming,” said Scroggs. Frankie D. Minor, Director of Residential Life, said that crossing College Avenue has been a problem for approximately 40 years. Now MU is “bridging the gap.” According to the University’s Residential Life Master Plan, the College Avenue Bridge was originally scheduled to be completed in 2006, but this project will now be completed in time for use in the Fall 2004 Semester.

In a 2002, a study of College Avenue traffic found that in a 5 hour period, College Avenue was crossed approximately 2,800 times. Seventy percent of these crossers were jaywalkers. This will only increase as the completion of the new Virginia complex will result in a community of 3000 students divided by College Avenue. More students mean more vehicle traffic, more foot traffic, and an increased element of danger.

Minor went as far as comparing an attempt to cross College Avenue to a human game of Frogger. Brett Ordnung, President of the Missouri Students Association, senior agriculture major agreed. “I’ve played Frogger many a time,” Ordnung said in reference to his trips to the animal science buildings for class.

Many students, like Ordnung, felt the need for a bridge. “Students asked for it, and it will be paid for by student fees,” said Minor. The budgeted cost right now is set at $3,357,400 with part of the money supplied by revenue bonds.

Refreshments and the official groundbreaking followed the ceremony on the north side of the Schurz Hall entry drive.
