Life Sciences Center: End in sight?
Chelsea Moffitt, Corner Post Staff

September 14, 2003 - On December 17, 2001, construction of the Life Sciences Center began, now almost two years later construction is still taking place on the 235,000 square foot building.

The building is composed of a 250-seat lecture auditorium, three teaching laboratories, four computer labs, a greenhouse and research labs. This summer's main project was to complete the driveway around the physics building leading to the Life Sciences Center.

"A neat fact about the building is that there is an underground tunnel that connects the building to a nearby service building," Dwight Hubert, construction engineer said.

The building is being funded in part by the state, part by private contribution, and approximately half of the funds are paid by a grant from NASA. The 250-seat auditorium is being named after one of the larger private contributors.

The construction contract is up in May 2004. The primary goal is to have the first floor completely moved in and ready for classes next August. "We have been lucky enough to stay on schedule with the construction. There have been a few problems, but they have been manageable," Hubert said.
